Gold lustre is a new thing for me. I’d not used it before but felt it could work well with my cream wavy forms so was keen to give it a go. Blimey it’s expensive (circa £50 for a tiny 2ml bottle) but it’s 24 karat gold so I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised.

It’s difficult to apply and the inevitable smudges are bloody tricky to clean off but a big shout out to the excellent forum of @studium_community for their incredibly useful help and advice.

So how’s the result? Well, notwithstanding all the faffing, I’m really pleased with the effect and am keen to use it more. But what do you think?

Trimming (sometimes called turning) is a process of refining the shape of a piece and is done when it’s reached the leather hard stage of drying. At that point it’s robust enough to hold the shape but soft enough to carve into. If you time it well, the clay curls off the turning tool in an immensely satisfying way and the process of revealing the inner shape of the piece is joyous. Time it too early however, it’ll be too soft and will collapse under the pressure. Leave it too late and it’s a teeth jarring scrapefest. That Goldilocks point of perfect dryness is every potter’s holy grail.

I’m dreadfully slack about doing proper glaze tests, generally relying on blind optimism over methodical testing. But using an untested glaze combination on three pieces intended as gifts for a special group of girlfriends was a major rookie error. A very depressing kiln opening revealed one had shattered, one had cracked and the bottom had fallen off the other. So lesson learned. Stop trying to wing it and do the bloody tests.

No studio time for me this month due to the arrival of a bunch of these little guys. It’s been a torrid few weeks but all the ewes have now given birth and the lambs are out enjoying the spring sunshine. I just hope they’ll stay out of mischief for long enough so that I can get back to some potting!
